Supplied note:
" As part of the project Asian Civic Rights Network: National Security,
Media and the Promotion of Rights in the Twenty First Century, we are
delighted to announce Issue Two of the online 'AsiaRights Journal' is out now at
[the URL below]
The online journal was officially launched at the conference of the
Asian Studies Association of Australia (coombs.anu.edu.au/ASAA/) in Canberra on 1 July 2004.
The journal focuses on the impact of contemporary security concerns on
the rights of the people of the Asia Pacific region.
The geographical coverage extends from Pakistan in the west to Papua New
Guinea and the Pacific Islands in the east, and from Siberia in the north to
Australia and New Zealand in the south.
Particular issues of concern which we hope to highlight in the journal
include the impact of anti-terrorism and national security laws on political
rights and freedom of speech; current issues relating to the rights of
ethnic and religious minority communities; the role of the region's media in
public debate about security and human rights; and the efforts of social
movements to enhance human rights around the Asia Pacific region. We welcome
suggestions on topics for inclusion in the journal.
