Department of Asian Languages and Cultures, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, USA
Supplied note:
"The University of Michigan announces its Summer Study Abroad program for
Tibetan Studies, now in its fourth year. This unique opportunity offers
undergraduate students a comprehensive nine week, six credit program for the
study of Tibetan language, history, and culture, situated in Tibet. It
combines two weeks in Tibet's capital Lhasa and neighboring urban areas, two
weeks in various rural areas on the high plateau of Central Tibet (the
Tibetan Autonomous Region), and four weeks of intensive field-study in one
of Tibet's unique cultural regions to the east or south. Course topics range
from Tibetan language, Buddhism, and traditional religious history to
contemporary cultural and social issues. The program makes use of leading
Tibetan and Western experts residing in Lhasa, extended visits to central
Tibetan religious and historical sites, and field-work projects in various
settings. The first of its kind to be offered by any academic institution in
the United States, the program traverses the breadth of the Tibet's
variegated landscapes and diverse cultures.
The dates for the Summer 2004 program are May 19 to July 19.
Application deadline is December 1, 2003. - aq."
