Proposed Closure of
the Department of East Asian Studies, University of Durham, Jul 2003
www.btinternet.com, UK.
Supplied note:
"Durham University has, without consultation or
due cause decided to close this eminent department in the UK. Academics
from the UK have protested about this short-sighted move. Other supporters
of the campaign to prevent the closure of the department include the
Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the Government. However, the campaign
needs global support.
[...W]ould it be possible to [...] ask
people to write to the Vice-Chancellor [i.e. Sir Kenneth Calman, Vice-Chancellor and Warden, University of Durham, University Office, Durham DH1 3HP, UK, email: Vice.Chancellor[use"@"]durham.ac.uk; with a copy to: e.a.studies[use"@"]durham.ac.uk - ed.] of the University? The crucial date
at this juncture is July 15 [2003] - ch."

[The U. of Durham claims (www.dur.ac.uk) to be "One of Britain's leading centres of learning." Should the 50 years of DEAS' history (www.dur.ac.uk/EastAsianStudies) be terminated, it is doubtful whether the University can remain such a leading center for much longer. - tmciolek]
