Supplied note: "Durham University has, without consultation or due cause decided to close this eminent department in the UK. Academics from the UK have protested about this short-sighted move. Other supporters of the campaign to prevent the closure of the department include the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the Government. However, the campaign needs global support.

[The U. of Durham claims (www.dur.ac.uk) to be "One of Britain's leading centres of learning." Should the 50 years of DEAS' history (www.dur.ac.uk/EastAsianStudies) be terminated, it is doubtful whether the University can remain such a leading center for much longer. - tmciolek]
