September 2003 season of excavations in Uzbekistan
Central Asian Programme (USCAP), University of Sydney, Sydney, Australia
Self-description: "The work of the Expedition is focused on the Tash-k'irman Oasis, one of the last preserved archaeological zones in Chorasmia. Much of the rest has been heavily disturbed by agricultural activity. Three sites are under excavation: Kazakl'i-yatkan,Tash-k'irman-tepe and Kara-tepe. Kazakl'i-yatkan is one of the largest fortified sites in the land and may either have been a capital of ancient Chorasmia or, perhaps more likely, a major sacred centre at sometime between the 4th century B.C. and the 1st or early 2nd century A.D. Tash-k'irman-tepe is a monumental religious complex with a fire temple which may date back to the early stages of the Zoroastrian religion. Kara-tepe is a small fortress which appears to have been founded in the 'Kushan' period around the 2nd century A.D. with occupation up to the 7th century A.D."
Supplied note: "The University of Sydney Central Asian Programme is again inviting volunteers to join their September 2003 season of excavations in Uzbekistan. Participants will spend 13 days working with archaeologists on the major fortified site of Kazakl'i-yatkan in the Oxus delta before going on to a tour of the Silk Road cities of Khiva, Samarkand and Bukhara - ab."
