Digital Archive for
Chinese Studies (DACHS)
Institute of Chinese Studies, University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany
Supplied note:
"[... A] project aiming at capturing and archiving Internet resources
reflecting public discourse in or about China that otherwise would be lost
for future research. In contrast to the Internet Archive
(http://www.archive.org), DACHS should be able to more flexibly respond to
events and issues relevant to the Chinese society. Although the
organisational framework of DACHS (based on the OAIS model) is
still under development, download activities started in August 2001. So far
[Dec 2002 - hl] we have collected about 375,000 files roughly corresponding
to 5.1 GB, and created some 600 metadata entries for access and
administrative purposes. The collection includes Web sites, e-journals,
films, snapshots of discussion boards, as well as hundreds of single
documents. Topics covered are the 16th Party Congress of the CCP, China's
and Taiwan's accession to the WTO, the September 11 terror attack, Falun
gong, and many others. The digital archive is part of ChinaResource.org, a project of the
Institute of Chinese Studies, University of Heidelberg, financed by the
Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Foundation.- hl."
Self-description: "Access to the digital archive is restricted to computers of the Institute of Chinese Studies [at the U. of Heidelberg].
If you want to view any files from outside the institute, please contact
the DACHS staff."
