"The Society, founded in the tradition of the Asiatic Societies of Bengal
(Calcutta) in 1874, Bombay/Mumbai in 1804, and London in 1824, has
in its long history been not only a pioneer in the development of
international studies related to Japan but also has continued to make
significant contributions to the present day in history, philosophy and
religion, the arts, literature and socials studies through its
publications, the annual journal The Transactions of the Asiatic
Society of Japan, the monthly bulletin, and the monthly lecture series
(September through June).
Membership is international with about one third Japanese and
another third resident overseas."
