The Empire that was Russia: The Prokudin-Gorskii Photographic Record Recreated
Library of Congress, Washington, DC, USA
Supplied note: "Dear friends and colleagues, You may remember my recommendation of a few months back to take a look at the Library of Congress website: 'The Empire that was Russia [...]' It provides some striking [manually reconstructed] color views of Central Asia and the Caucasus taken [as three separate black-and-white glass-plate images, each through a different filter (red, green, or blue) - ed.] by this Russian photographer [... between 1907 to 1915 - ed.]. Since then, the LC has provided a searchable database for the whole collection [of 1,903 images] in b&w at: lcweb2.loc.gov/pp/prokquery.html They are still working out some of the subject indexing issues, but it is highly useful. Relatively rough color images [synthetised by a computer program by Frank Dellaert - ed.] for the whole collection are now available at: www-2.cs.cmu.edu/~dellaert/aligned/ Furthermore, Russell Manning has posted his [automatic recombination of separated color channels of] color renderings at: www.cs.wisc.edu/~rmanning/homepage/research/prokudin-gorsky/ I trust you will find these interesting. Best, Jeff."
Site contents: Object List; Credits; Chronology; Exhibition sections: (Photographer to the Tsar: Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii [1863-1944], Architecture, Ethnic Diversity, Transportation, People at Work); Making Color Images from Prokudin-Gorskii's Negatives; Read More About It; Search the Entire Collection.
