Self-description: "The JACAR is established for the purpose of providing through the Internet the index and the digital image information of historical records about modern Japan-Asia relations held and made available to the public by Japanese national institutions. As the mentioned records are so numerous, we are starting to provide from the records held by the National Archives of Japan [incl. 'Dajo Ruiten', 'Kubun Roku', 'Kobun Ruishu' and 'Kobun Zassan' series - ed.], The Diplomatic Record Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs [incl. about 600,000 microfilm frames of category 'A' documents (political and diplomatic affairs) of pre- and in wartime period of Showa era - ed.] , and The National Institute for Defense Studies of the National Defense Agency [incl. Japanese Imperial Army's Records: 'Rikugunsyo Dainikki'(1868 to 1942), 'Jinchunisshi' ,'Sentoshoho' etc: (records of battles from the foundation of the Japanese Imperial Army to the end of World War II), Japanese Imperial Navy's Records: 'Kaigunsho kobun biko' (military education, warships, and weapons 1876 to 1937), 'Senzinisshi', 'Sentoshoho', etc: (records of battles from the foundation of the Japanese Imperial Army and Navy to the end of World War II) - ed.], where great held and transformed into digital images. The original records provided by the JACAR are available in the above mentioned institutions."
