Tibetan Townships Database
Diamond Bay Research, Cambridge, MA, USA
Supplied note: "Tibetan Placenames datasets have been produced by CHGIS [the China Historical GIS Project (fas.harvard.edu/~chgis/) - ed.] for a digital gazetteer in cooperation with the Tibetan and Himalayan Digital Library (U. of Virginia). CHGIS completed a dataset including Chinese Characters and has sent them to THDL for addition of Tibetan names. The Tibetan dataset is searchable at: [the URL below] The source file is available from CHGIS upon request."
[Currently it is a very rudimentary online system covering PRC prefectures of Ali, Changdu (Chamdo), Lhasa, Linzhi Naqu, Rigaze (Shigaze), and Shannan. So far the database does not provide Tibetan names, nor their long-lat coordinates. An example of the record for a town "Dasa" follows: Chinese Name: [name in BIG5 format - ed.]; Pinyin Name: Dasa; Chinese Admin Unit: [name in BIG5 format - ed.]; Admin Unit: xiang; English Equivalent of Admin Unit: rural township; County Name: Naqu; Prefecture Name: Naqu Diqu; GB 91 County ID: 542421 Ryavec Township ID: 54242154 (id internal to the project) - ed.]
