Supplied note: "Old World Traditional Trade Routes (OWTRAD) Project provides a public-access electronic archive of geo/chrono-referenced data on land, river and maritime trade routes of Eurasia and Africa during the period 10,000 BCE - circa 1820 CE. In early May 2001 there were 16 GIS-ready datasets including those on: Middle East, 600 BCE-500 BCE, trade routes (13 records); Persia, 50 BCE-300 CE, trade routes (92 records); Central Asia, 700-1000 CE, 'Silk Road' routes (58 records); Central Asia, 1 CE-1400 CE, 'Silk Road' routes (81 records); India, 1550-1710 CE, major roads (88 records); Karakoram and Pamir,1900 CE, major travel routes (17 records). All OWTRAD data are stored in plain text (low ASCII) format. Records are published on separate lines, one record per line. Fields within records are separated by a comma. All records are designed to be copied from the screen and used as an input for subsequent word-processing, email, database, spreadsheet, or GIS operations. In addition to the datasets the site offers 'The OWTRAD Gazetteer' version 6.0 Apr 2001, with geographical coordinates for 4358 variant names of 1000 places (current as well as historical settlements, oases, river and mountain crossings, etc.) in Asia, Europe and Africa."
