Xinjiang, China's Restive Northwest
Human Rights Watch, New York, NY, USA
Supplied note:
"Increasing separatist activity over the last five years in the
Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region (XUAR) in China's northwest is
fueling ongoing repression in the region, with Chinese authorities
carrying out large scale arrests, trials, and executions. The region
is home to eight million Uighurs, who have much closer religious,
ethnic, and cultural ties with their independent neighbors than with
the rest of China and who see in the new republics a model for their
own independence."
