Australia and East Timor, May 2000
Manning Clark House, and Centre for Australian
Cultural Studies, Australian Defence Force Academy, Canberra, Australia.
Supplied note:
"Manning Clark House in conjunction with the Centre for Australian
Cultural Studies [...] will be holding a seminar 'Australia and Timor'
on 5 May 2000 to be held in the Main Committee Room at Parliament
House [Canberra]. Guest speakers include: Jose Xanana Gusmao,
President of the National Council of Timorese Resistance; The Hon. Tim
Fischer, former Minister for Trade in the Howard Government [...]; The
Hon. Laurie Brereton, Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs [and several
other distinguished speakers]."
[The 1-day seminar was attended by 130+ academics, journalists,
politicians, diplomats, and staff of several NGOs. In a world where
universities increasingly often act like business corporations, this
initiative of Mrs Dymphna Clark and the members of her family, aimed
at the creation of a university-like public environment for the expert
thought and informed discussion, is a very refreshing and very
inspiring development - ed.]
