Beijing Y2K: The Bug and You!
U.S. Embassy Beijing, China
Supplied note:
"Summary: Chinese officials gave frank assessments of Y2K
problems and achievements at a February 2, 1999, Y2K forum. The
Beijing municpal government speaker outlined the Y2K threat to
key sectors in the muncipal infrastructure including electricity,
water, gas, telecommunications. The seminar entitled 'Y2K: the
bug and you!' Sponsored by the China-Australia Chamber of
Commerce and the Australian Trade Commission, was also
attended by the Ministry of Information Industry (MII), the Beijing
Municipal government (BMG), and the Civil Aviation Administration
of China (CAAC). CAAC discussed in detail Y2K fixes and plans in
the civil aviation sector. Cadbury China had procured emergency
equipment such as boilers and generators in an effort to keep the
chocolate flowing. A public relations firm believed that the realistic
deadline for Y2K compliance was June 1999 and those not
prepared by June should concentrate on making contingency
plans."
