The Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names (TGN)
The Getty Information Institute, Los Angeles, USA
Supplied note:
"The TGN is the first automated source of hierarchically
arranged geographic data that is global in scope. The TGN
comprises records for nearly 1 million place names representing
approximately 900,000 places. It provides vernacular, English,
and historical names, as well as background information about the
places. The TGN is updated on an ongoing basis. Most of the place
records in the TGN include geographic (lat/long) coordinates. The
planned expansion of the TGN aims at the addition of names and
other information to places already in the database, as well as
the addition of historical places and historical hierarchies."
Self-description: "TGN [...] is a structured vocabulary developed
primarily for the field of art history, but with the potential
for wide applications in related disciplines such as archeology,
history and geography."
