1997: Countdown to History
South China Morning Post (SCMP), Hong Kong
After 155 years of British Colonial rule, Hong Kong will become a
Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China on
July 1, 1997. For the next 50 years, Hong Kong will maintain its
promised "high degree of autonomy", under the "one country, two
systems" principle China espoused in the Joint Declaration it signed
with Britain and China on December 19, 1984. For all the information
you need to understand this historic event, explore the following sections:
Timeline, Changes, The Sino-British Joint Declaration, Business Issues, The
Basic Law, Views and Opinions. Also included are over 170 SCMP articles
