Dec 03 - The Coombspapers, world's
oldest and most extensive Social Sciences and Asian Studies
File Transfer Protocol site
established on coombs.anu.edu.au.
Details of this 'Anonymous FTP' [= unrestricted public
access] site are available online.
1992
May - several full-text WAIS (Wide Area Information Servers)
databases have been constructed
by the Coombs Computing Unit. In
August 1995 these databases (all running on the machine
coombs.anu.edu.au), constituted, approximately 14% of all of the
on-line public-access databases in the world. In January
1996 the maintenance on these databases has been discontinued.
1993
April 28 - Coombs Computing Unit the
Coombsquest Gopher, specialising
in tracking and cataloging online resources for Social Sciences and Asian Studies. In November
1995 the maintenance on the Coombsquest Gopher, established on cheops.anu.edu.au has been discontinued.
July - Coombs Computing Unit installs a mailing software
(majordomo@coombs.anu.edu.au) which
enables a construction of the several tens of scholarly mailing lists
focused on Asian Studies.
Mar 24 - Asian
Studies WWW Virtual Library site established on
coombs.anu.edu.au. The first document is about 7Kb long and lists all 40-50 known to exist
links for all countries and regions of Asia. The current vital statistics and other
details of the project are available online.

Up that time the home page of the Project was accessed 940,164 times.

closes down.
Apr 21 - The Asian Studies WWW Monitor
celebrates the fourth anniversary. During the 4 years of operations the journal published details of content & evaluation of research usefullness of 2061
web, gopher and ftp resources. During that time the WWW edition of the journal (5 volumes, 51 issues)
was accessed 153,229 times. On 20 Apr 1998 the e-mail edition of the journal
(asia-www-monitor@coombs.anu.edu.au) had 581 subscribers.
Apr - New issue of the Asian Studies WWW Monitor is published every 10-14 days.
Jul 02 - Chinese and Japanese Art History WWW VL established
