THE ASIAN STUDIES WWW VIRTUAL LIBRARY (including all its subsidiary (and/or sister) pages on "coombs.anu.edu.au" server) has permanently ceased its publishing operations on Tuesday 25th January 2011.
All of the online resources reported here have been thoroughly checked at the time of their listing. However, it is possible that, with the with the passage of time, many of the originally reported materials might have been removed from the Internet, or changed their online address, or varied the scope and quality of their contents.
Fortunately, in several cases it is possible to access many of the older versions of the resources listed in this WWW VL. This can be easily done via the free services of the "The Internet Archive" http://web.archive.org/, a remarkable brainchild of Brewster Kahle, San Francisco, CA.

Placing Foundations for the AS WWW VL Project

1991

Dec 03 - The Coombspapers, world's oldest and most extensive Social Sciences and Asian Studies File Transfer Protocol site established on coombs.anu.edu.au. Details of this 'Anonymous FTP' [= unrestricted public access] site are available online.

1992

May - several full-text WAIS (Wide Area Information Servers) databases have been constructed by the Coombs Computing Unit. In August 1995 these databases (all running on the machine coombs.anu.edu.au), constituted, approximately 14% of all of the on-line public-access databases in the world. In January 1996 the maintenance on these databases has been discontinued.

1993

April 28 - Coombs Computing Unit the Coombsquest Gopher, specialising in tracking and cataloging online resources for Social Sciences and Asian Studies. In November 1995 the maintenance on the Coombsquest Gopher, established on cheops.anu.edu.au has been discontinued.

July - Coombs Computing Unit installs a mailing software (majordomo@coombs.anu.edu.au) which enables a construction of the several tens of scholarly mailing lists focused on Asian Studies.

1994

Jan 25 - Coombsweb - ANU Social Sciences/Asian Studies Server established on coombs.anu.edu.au. At the time of its launch it was 850th web server in the world.

Asian Studies WWW VL Project launched

Mar 24 - Asian Studies WWW Virtual Library site established on coombs.anu.edu.au. The first document is about 7Kb long and lists all 40-50 known to exist links for all countries and regions of Asia. The current vital statistics and other details of the project are available online.

Apr 21 - The Asian Studies WWW Monitor (ISSN 1329-9778) launched under a title 'What's New in WWW Asian Studies'.

Jul 18 - Japan WWW VL established on fuji.stanford.edu, the original site on coombs.anu.edu.au closes down.

Sep - Thailand WWW VL established on www.nectec.or.th, the original site on coombs.anu.edu.au closes down.

Jan 09 - Tibetan Studies WWW VL established on coombs.anu.edu.au

Apr 27 - India WWW VL established on webhead.com, the original site on coombs.anu.edu.au closes down.

Jan 26 - Study Abroad Asia VL established on asnic.utexas.edu.

Feb 11 - Middle East WWW VL established on www.columbia.edu, the former WWW VL site on menic.utexas.edu leaves the AS WWW VL project.

Feb 19 - Georgia WWW VL established on voyager.rtd.utk.edu, the original site on coombs.anu.edu.au closes down.

Mar 24 - Asian Studies WWW Virtual Library site celebrates the fourth anniversary. Up that time the home page of the Project was accessed 940,164 times.

Apr 09 - Associates of the AS WWW VL program commenced, the first 4 Associates join the Project.

?Apr - Eastern Turkistan WWW VL established on ellow.ccs.uky.edu ceases to be updated, and effectively closes down.

Apr 21 - The Asian Studies WWW Monitor celebrates the fourth anniversary. During the 4 years of operations the journal published details of content & evaluation of research usefullness of 2061 web, gopher and ftp resources. During that time the WWW edition of the journal (5 volumes, 51 issues) was accessed 153,229 times. On 20 Apr 1998 the e-mail edition of the journal (asia-www-monitor@coombs.anu.edu.au) had 581 subscribers.

Apr - New issue of the Asian Studies WWW Monitor is published every 10-14 days.

Jul 02 - Chinese and Japanese Art History WWW VL established on pages.nyu.edu joins the AS WWW VL project.
