Conservation International - Melanesia Region
The Melanesia Region encompasses Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, and New Caledonia. These islands harbor rich terrestrial biodiversity, high levels of endemism, and unsurpassed marine biodiversity. Melanesia also has a rich cultural heritage; the people in this region speak more than one-third of all the world's languages. Papua New Guinea (PNG) is the largest and most diverse country in Melanesia, and possesses tropical forests and freshwater wetlands equal in biological importance to those of the Amazon and Congo Basins.
