Electoral systems: Papua New Guinea
The South Pacific country of Papua New Guinea (PNG) has utilised two different electoral systems - the Alternative Vote (AV) from 1964-1975 when it was an Australian territory, and First Past the Post (FPTP) from 1975 onwards, when it attained independence, see Alternative Vote and First Past the Post (FPTP). Its experience is interesting for a number of reasons.

Papua New Guinea, the counting of votes have started in some of the seats in the first week of general elections. The election period, which began last Saturday has already been marked by violence in some areas, frustrating delays - even the Prime Minister had to wait nearly five hours to vote, and serious discrepancies in the electoral role. Joining us on the line from Port Moresby is Joe Kamekame, senior writer with the Independent newspaper.
