PNG Land Symposium: Culture vs Progress: The Melanesian Philosophy of Land and Development in Papua New Guinea
The subject of this symposium is a crucial one for the future of PNG. The issue of public communal and private ownership and use of resources, specially land and water, is crucial to the future development of the country. Land is the lifeblood of the Papua New Guinea people. Yet the influx of western culture, along with the western wiev of land, has been a source of conflict between traditional beliefs and modern development.
