On-line Resources for Researchers

The Centre has recently made some resources available on-line for those researchers in the field of immigration and multicultural studies who have access to the Internet. This article explains and lists some of the resources available.

What does on-line mean? It means that you have a computer which is linked to a network either at a University or a government or commercial organisation with an Internet connection. The Internet is a world-wide network of computers with addresses that can be accessed by a number of means. The addresses, for those of you who have electronic mail, are those bits of your e-mail address which come after the @. For example, the Australian National University's central address is anu.edu.au and the address of the Research School of Social Sciences at the ANU is coombs.anu.edu.au.

To make use of the services which are available on the Internet, computer users utilise programs such as Eudora (for electronic mail), Telnet (eg to login to a remote library), Gopher (to access Gopher servers which are repositories of a wide rage of data) and browsers such as Mosaic, MacWeb or Netscape for accessing World Wide Web servers (and also Gopher and FTP databases). The kinds of data which are held by the servers vary widely in form and content, ranging from archives of documents and statistical and scientific data to art galleries with viewable displays, musical archives and experimental sound presentations, and even clips from films which are produced especially for on-line viewing.

The Research School of Social Sciences at the ANU has been a path-blazer in this new and exciting feld of research, and has set up a variety of databases and services to enable researchers to easily and quickly locate on-line services of interest to them. As part of the Research School's Social Sciences Server "Coombsweb", the Centre has produced an on-line World Wide Web page of information and electronic links to other servers of relevance to researchers. As from this issue, Polyphony will also be provided as an on-line publication, making it available to an even wider circulation than currently. In the near future it is hoped that an e-mail interest group (electronic mailing list) will be formed for the purpose of exchanging information and views on current issues. Any readers of Polyphony who are interested in joining this list are welcome to send their e-mail addresses to Andrea McRobbie at the Centre. Andrea's e-mail address is andrea@coombs.anu.edu.au and she will be happy to advise you when the list is operational. If you wish to access the Centre's World Wide Web page, use your browser to open the URL:

http://coombs.anu.edu.au/SpecialProj/CIMS/CIMSHomePage.html

Please also advise the Centre, through Andrea, if your organisation, or a related one, provides any on-line resources which may be linked to the Centre's Page in the future.

NEW BOOK COMMEMORATES LIFE OF ONE OF BILLY HUGHES' MALTESE CHILDREN!

Illustration - Book Cover

EMMANUEL ATTARD: from Gozo (Malta) to Gallipoli to Australia

(Compiled by Mark Caruana and Barry York; published by the Centre for Immigration & Multicultural Studies, Australian National University, Canberra) 154 pp $15

Emmanuel Attard was one of 214 Maltese migrants who travelled to Australia on the French mailboat Gange in 1916. Turned away from Australia by Prime Minister Billy Hughes, they ended up stranded at New Caledonia. Today, these men are remembered among Maltese communities as "it'tfal ta' Billy Hughes", or "the children of Billy Hughes". This book tells the story of the only survivor of the Gange incident alive today: Mr. Emmanuel Attard.

As British subjects by birth, the Maltese on the Gange had no reason to believe they would be classified as prohibited immigrants under section 3(a) of the Immigration Act. This was the notorious 'dictation test' provision, which allowed for a test to be administered in any European language. A Maltese priest based in Sydney who boarded the Gange and interviewed the men found that they had been tested in the Dutch language.

Mr Attard's story is a notable addition to the exisiting literature on Australia's ethnic history, particularly on non-Anglo immigrant groups, on the reasons why many non-English-speaking-background people left their homelands for Australia long ago, on the effects of the 1930s Depression on every day life in South Australia and on how one man, with special grit, good humour and intelligence, survived.

Commencing with his impoverished childhood on the Maltese island of Gozo, the story takes the reader through Mr Attard's service with the Malta Labour Corps at Gallipoli and, later, on the Western Front with the Australian Army.

This book is based on extensive oral history interviews conducted for the National Library of Australia's Oral History Collection by Barry York with Mr Attard and his children, Monica and Brian, in 1989. It also contains a brief autobiography and a selection of historical documents.

Emmanuel Attard's story highlights many salient features of the Gozitan people: their tenacity, adaptability, diligence and strength. While Emmanuel Attard remains proudly Maltese, this is a story of the Australian 'battler' and a tribute to the capacity of working-class people everywhere to survive against often tremendous social and economic odds.

AT $15 A COPY, THIS 154 PAGED BOOK IS GOOD VALUE. AVAILABLE BY MAIL ORDER FROM: CIMS/RSSS, AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY, ACT, 0200, AUSTRALIA (Please make out your cheque for $(Aus)15 to "CIMS/ANU")
