Coombsweb Terminology

Author:
a person who creates the original material but may not understand publishing on the Web.
Button:
a small graphic used to represent a link to other pages.
Coombsweb:
a collection of documents and sites residing on coombs.anu.edu.au address.
Coombsweb editor:
a person responsible for coordination of electronic publishing projects initiated or supervised by divisional or departmental Web editors.
Corporate information
official publication in form of documents with materials about the Schools, Divisions or Departments
Designer:
a person who plans the construction of a coherent collection of related web pages. See also Coombsweb editor, Web Editor, Maintainer.
External link:
a link to a page not stored on the current server.
Home page:
top level page, or the entry or starting point to an organization's or area's information. The file is typically called "xxx-home.html", eg. sociology-home.html
HTML:
Hypertext Mark-up Language. A computer code for structuring, linking and displaying information contained in an web page.
Icon:
a small graphic to help people identify where they are or the subject matter being presented.
Informational graphic:
a medium or large sized graphic (e.g. picture, map, diagram) containing information on the subject matter.
Informational page:
contains information on the subject matter.
Maintainer:
a person who makes sure that the information published in a collection of web pages is up-to-date and that the pages do not contain misleading or malfunctioning hypertext links. See also Coombsweb editor, Web Editor, Designer.
Navigational page:
consists of links to other pages and does not contain any subject matter.
Official publication:
Research, Corporate, and Technical information for use by readers within and without the Joint Schools. It is to be placed on the web from a sub-directory /home/data/www/coombs/Depts/ on the coombs.anu.edu.au machine.
Page:
a single html document.
Personal page:
a private publication, one which is not formally representing author's work at the Joint Schools. It is to be placed on the web from a private account on the the cheops.anu.edu.au machine.
Publishing:
preparation (cleaning, proof-reading, formatting and structuring) of electronic material supplied by an author and placing it online in form of one or more well organised and hyperlinked pages.
Research information:
documents with data, analyses and other scholarly materials; Virtual Libraries; online databases.
Screen:
the view of a page on a visual display unit.
Technical information:
documents with instructions on the use of the IT resources, pages with links to software or related technical documentation
Web Editor:
a person who prepares material for web publishing or plans or coordinates the construction of a collection of related web pages. This responsibility can take place at a level of an individual research project, department, division or even of the whole School. See also Coombsweb editor, Designer, Maintainer.
Virtual Library:
an annotated, frequently updated subject guide to online resources (documents, databases, mailing lists, catalogues of links)
