My PhD research investigates the dynamics of participation and livelihoods change associated with the implementation of marine protected areas in Viet Nam. My in-country research focuses on different scales of operation by examining two project case studies as examples of different types of MPA conservation, and also by study of the broader policy context associated with MPA development and collaborative management of aquatic natural resources. |

A
two-day training workshop was conducted in mid-December 2007 for
government officials at the Vietnamese Institute for Human Rights
(VIHR) to address the issue of environment in relation to health
and human rights.
IUCN
Viet Nam and the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) signed
in late December 2007 a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Business
for Sustainable Development in Viet Nam. This is an innovative approach
to nature conservation in the country. 
The Government of Viet Nam, with the support of the IUCN and in coordination
with other partners, is developing the Draft Biodiversity Law. This is
initiated subsequent to the Government Decision No. 35/2003/QD-TTg, which
mandates the development to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment
(MONRE). 
A training course on the use of Geographic Information System (GIS)
software, My World GIS, to support Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)
ecosystem management was co-sponsored by IUCN Viet Nam in November
2007 at Nui Chua National Park in Ninh Thuan province.
At
the end of November 2007, IUCN co-organized the “Mangrove Restoration
for climate change adaptation and Sustainable Development”
workshop in Can Gio district, Ho Chi Minh city in partnership with other
local and international partners.
The Government of Viet Nam is making efforts to apply the Ecosystem Approach
to wetlands and protected area management with technical and field support
from IUCN. The Ecosystem Approach is the primary framework for action for
natural resrouces management under the Convention on Biological Diversity.
