Introducing a new perspective: environment in relation to human rights

Human Rights and Environment WorkshopA two-day training workshop was conducted in mid-December 2007 for government officials at the Vietnamese Institute for Human Rights (VIHR) to address the issue of environment in relation to health and human rights.

The workshop was co-organized by VIHR and The World Conservation Union (IUCN) in Viet Nam and was based on the results of a survey conducted in September and October 2007.

Colourful and creative drawings produced by the children of Minh Chau Island Secondary School were displayed at an award ceremony on November 19, 2007 to celebrate student participation in the “I Love Marine Turtles” Campaign. This is part of the “Saving Marine Turtles and their Habitat” environmental education programme that promotes good practices of marine biodiversity preservation.

Mangrove restoration:  Protecting the coast and mitigating climate change impacts

mangrovee restoration workshopAt the end of November 2007, IUCN co-organized the “Mangrove Restoration for climate change adaptation and Sustainable Development” workshop in Can Gio district, Ho Chi Minh city in partnership with other local and international partners.

The purpose of the workshop was to strengthen biodiversity protection measures for Can Gio Mangrove Forest and to apply lessons learned to other mangrove forests in Viet Nam.

Second regional roundtable: Sustainable financing: Current status and emerging opportunities

Date: January 23-25, 2008

Venue: Vientiane, Lao PDR

Objective: The 2nd Regional Roundtable aims to foster regional dialogue on Payment for Environmental Services, with a view to sharing knowledge and working towards a common understanding and approach.

Participants: Government and non-government implementation partners of the Asian Regional Biodiversity Conservation Program (ARBCP) from Viet Nam, Lao, Cambodia and Thailand.

Raising public awareness on the Asian Regional Biodiversity Conservation Program

Date:  January 21-27 January and March 6-7,,2008

Venue: Lam Dong Province, Viet Nam

Objective: To raise public awareness on biodiversity conservation by providing information on project activities and their objectives for communities.  A competition at village and commune levels on “Knowing about the ARBCP” will be organized.

Training workshop for People’s Court

Date: February 27-28 February, 2008

Venue: Lam Dong Province, Viet Nam

Objective: To build the judiciary awareness of, and capacity in legal provisions, and to ensure compliance with environmental regulations in support of biodiversity conservation.

Participants: Judges, prosecutors, environmental police, and forest rangers of Lam Dong Province

Milestones in IUCN’s partnership with Holcim Viet Nam

February: Signing agreement with Holcim Viet Nam

March: Preparation mission to Hon Chong and Kien Giang to develop the master plan for Holcim’s integrated karst management project.

Launch of Connect2Earth: a Nokia/IUCN/WWF initiative on environment protection

Date: March 2008

Objective: To establish a public web space for people to tell the world why they care about the environment and why it should be protected. Photos, video clips, or text can be uploaded via the web site or your mobile device. This is a competition and the first place message will be presented by the winner at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Barcelona, Spain this October.

Target group: All individuals, especially youth

The final documentation DVD of the Non-timber Forest Products (NTFPs) sub-sector support project.

NTFP DVD
We have a limited number of nice packaged copies for people who are interested, but you can always ask for a normal copy. The DVD will also be uploaded on the Viet Nam NTFP website at www.ntfp.org.vn . This IUCN-executed project which is funded by the Royal Netherlands Government had two phases, from 1998 to 2007, and has been the basis for the formulation of the coming NTFP Sub-sector Support Program.

My PhD research investigates the dynamics of participation and livelihoods change associated with the implementation of marine protected areas in Viet Nam. My in-country research focuses on different scales of operation by examining two project case studies as examples of different types of MPA conservation, and also by study of the broader policy context associated with MPA development and collaborative management of aquatic natural resources.
